When Charging Feels Wrong

Many authors don’t struggle with creating an offer.

They struggle with charging for it.

In this episode of After the Book, I respond to a question from Rachel, an author who teaches mindfulness and recently ran a free workshop based on her book.

The workshop went well.

People were engaged.

One participant told her it was the most useful thing she’d done in months.

And when Rachel started thinking about offering it again (and charging for it) she froze.

Because charging felt like a contradiction.

If your work is about helping people, shouldn’t it be accessible?

If it’s something you care deeply about, shouldn’t it be freely given?

These are questions many authors wrestle with, especially those in helping professions.

But beneath the pricing question is something deeper. It’s a belief about value, generosity, and what it means to be compensated for your best work.

In this episode, I explore why sustainability matters, why accessibility and compensation can coexist, and why building a business around your message doesn’t have to compromise it.

Sometimes the most generous thing you can do is make sure you can keep showing up.
